Senior IT System Engineer / IT Operations (m/w/d)

In this key position, you will be responsible for the stability and scalability of our business-critical infrastructure. We operate a large e-commerce platform where downtime is not an option.

Platform Operations & Infrastructure

• Data Centre & Virtualisation:
  Independently operate and maintain our physical server infrastructure in the data centre. Design and administer our virtualisation environments based on Microsoft Windows Hyper-V, including standalone hosts and failover clusters.

• Backup & Disaster Recovery:
  Take responsibility for data security and rapid recovery scenarios, including RTO and RPO, using Veeam Backup & Replication.

• 3rd Level Support & Administration:
  Perform in-depth troubleshooting and administer our core Microsoft infrastructure, particularly Microsoft 365 and Exchange Online.

• Monitoring & Alerting:
  Proactively monitor the system landscape using Datadog, Wotan, and Pingdom. Define SLA reporting and alerting workflows via webhooks, email, and SMS.

• Infrastructure Documentation:
  Maintain accurate and up-to-date network and system documentation in NetBox.

Platform Performance & Security Engineering

• Traffic Management & Web Security:
  Ensure the 24/7 availability of our e-commerce platform. Manage load balancing using HApee Enterprise (HAProxy) and take responsibility for security and performance optimisation through our Akamai Web Application Firewall (WAF).

• Database & Web Infrastructure:
  Operate and optimise highly available Microsoft SQL Server clusters and manage IIS and Nginx web servers to reliably handle traffic peaks in our online shop.

• Container Orchestration & DevOps:
  Scale our modern container environments using Kubernetes, Docker, and Podman to support agile deployment processes.

• Network & Security:
  Manage the network infrastructure, including VLANs and Ubiquiti UniFi, as well as internal IT security through Sophos firewalls.

• Automation & AI:
  Develop complex automation solutions using PowerShell and Bash. Use AI tools such as Claude Code to improve efficiency and support AI workloads, for example Nvidia Spark.

• Several years of professional experience in 3rd level support or system administration within a business-critical environment, ideally in e-commerce or web hosting
• Hands-on experience operating data centre hardware, combined with deep expertise in virtualisation, particularly Hyper-V clusters, and database high availability using SQL Server clusters
• Strong knowledge of traffic management, load balancing with HAProxy or HApee Enterprise, and edge security and CDN solutions, particularly Akamai WAF
• In-depth knowledge of web server administration, including Nginx and IIS
• Hands-on experience with container orchestration using Kubernetes and modern DevOps tools such as Docker and Podman
• Strong knowledge of network segmentation using VLANs, firewalls such as Sophos, and backup strategies using Veeam
• Excellent scripting skills in PowerShell and Bash for process automation
• Experience with enterprise monitoring solutions such as Datadog, Pingdom, and Wotan
• Strong analytical skills, resilience in critical system situations, and a pronounced hands-on mentality
• Very good written and spoken German skills, at least C1 level
